Our Lean In Beijing Team

In April 2013, a young Chinese woman working at a State Owned Enterprise in Beijing passed along her copy of Lean In to her close friend, an American also working in Beijing. The book struck a deep chord with the two young women, who as friends had discussed their career and family ambitions but were excited to connect to a larger, global discussion about women, leadership, and change. They quickly assembled a small group of friends and launched the first Lean In Circle in China.

Our Circle is now a small group of 10 talented and ambitious women from mainland China, Hong Kong, the United States, and Singapore. We work in commercial, State-Owned, and nonprofit organizations in finance, health, journalism and media; one of us just had a young child, and is “leaning back.” We meet monthly, and often bi-monthly, to help each other set and accomplish personal and professional goals. We’re passionate about learning and individual growth, and we enjoy exploring issues related to the roles of women in society, the factors that shape those roles, and differences across cultures. We feel that the iterated, confidential engagement and support that emerges from the intimate Circle format is very valuable.

We are starting small, but our ambitions are big. As we work on improving our own Circle, we also want to facilitate and shape conversations about the roles of women in China today. Ultimately, we hope to become a “Circle of Circles” in China.

Our organizing team is the driving force behind Lean In Beijing. We are a volunteer group of men and women that work together to plan events and activities, coordinate and support Circles, and engage a broader public conversation about work, family, and success in China.

We are always looking for passionate individuals to join our organizing team. If you’re interested in volunteering or helping with events or other activities, please let us know by emailing us at
